Roy loses it and picks a fight with a burly prisoner but there’s a surprise twist in Coronation Street

Roscoe tries to watch Roy play chess in his cell in Corrie

Things are finally looking up for Roy Cropper (David Neilson) in Coronation Street after striking an unlikely friendship behind bars.

The legendary café worker has been shutting himself off from friends and family for months, ever since he was charged with the apparent murder of Lauren Bolton (Cait Fitton).

As the last person to see her alive, and helping to clean her flat after she vanished, his good deeds proved to be the catalyst for DS Lisa Swain (Vicky Myers) to point the finger at him.

To make matters worse, he discovered that his closest friend, Carla Barlow (Alison King) and her nephew Bobby Crawford (Jack Carroll) had perverted the course of justice and fabricated a story to aid his release.

Roy, being a good citizen, wanted a fair trial, despite the fact he is completely innocent.

In tonight’s (22nd May) episode, he sat in his cell alone playing chess. Over at the caff, his pal Stu Carpenter (Bill Fellows) told Nina Lucas (Mollie Gallagher) that one of his friends from his prison days had agreed to keep an eye out for Roy inside.

Friendly Roscoe (Warren Donnelly) walked into Roy’s room, but was immediately shut down in a huge change to his character.

Let’s just say, after the way he behaved, it wouldn’t surprise us if he really did kill Lauren!

Roscoe was taken aback by his behaviour, clearly not the same man that Stu had told him to befriend – but was willing to give him a second chance.

Later in the day, he returned to the cell with a copy of Oliver Twist from the prison library, and reasoned with Roy that he should be more open with his fellow inmates.

In a more cheerful mood, he rang the Roy’s Rolls phone to speak with Nina and to thank Stu for introducing him to Roscoe – and even admitted that they were going to enjoy a game of chess together.

However, his happiness could be short lived as next week, vicious right wing extremist Griff Reynolds (Michael Condron) arrives at Highfield Prison – and is out for revenge.
