Coronation Street

Soap fans devastated as ITV bosses opt to pull soaps from air with hours to go

Fans of Emmerdale and Coronation Street will have to wait to find out all the latest drama as ITV decide to take the shows off the air only hours before they were due to air

Fans of ITV’s biggest soaps will have to wait to find out the latest drama after the channel decided to pull the shows off the air.

In a schedule shake-up, Emmerdale and Coronation Street will not be airing on Friday night (June 14), according to the channel. Other stalwarts such as ITV News have had to be moved from their regular slots.

Under normal circumstances, soap fans would be settling in for a night of drama every Monday, Wednesday and Friday night. Emmerdale is usually shown on ITV1 at 7:30pm, whilst Corrie airs at 8pm, giving fans the latest update on the shenanigans from Weatherfield and Emmerdale itself.

However, for Friday night, this is all set to change as the schedule gets turned on its head. The reasoning for the move is because the country will be getting behind Scotland as they kick off Euro 2024 against home nation Germany.

Scotland fans at Euro 2024
Scotland fans have flooded the city of Munich ahead of their first match for Euro 2024

The month-long football tournament officially begins on Friday, with the Tartan Army descending on the southern city of Munich to support the team, who have not been abroad in a Euros championship since 1998. The match against the host nation, kicks off at 6:30pm British time, and as a result, ITV has had to clear the entire schedule for the evening.

This is the first fully-fledged Euros championship since the Covid-19 pandemic, which disrupted the planned Euro 2020 season. The tournament was held one year later, but due to fears of Covid booms, many games were held in limited venues to reduce transmission.

Belle Dingle
Viewers will have to wait to see what Belle Dingle does in Emmerdale

England fans came close to glory in the latest edition of the tournament, making it all the way to the final after a month of tough competition. However, after a 1-1 draw against Italy, the Lions could not clinch the victory after losing the match on penalties.

Soap fans will be in for a tough ride over the next month as the tournament will last from Friday until July 14, with a total of 51 matches being played. As schedules are only published two weeks in advance, it is impossible to tell when other games could get in the way of the latest antics on the cobbles or in the village.

Toyah in Coronation Street
Toyah is also struggling on the cobbles, as fans will discover on Tuesday

Currently, however, it has been confirmed the next time both Emmerdale and Coronation Street will be shown is on Tuesday (June 18), with each show being given its own hour-long episode. Fans of the shows will be able to revel in the latest drama as Matty Barton continues struggle in prison after being wrongly accused to stabbing Samson Dingle.

Similarly, Belle Dingle is seen visiting a midwife as she makes the decision to terminate her pregnancy as her domestic abuse storyline continues. On Corrie, things are just as dramatic as Toyah continues to struggle in dealing with her baby Rose’s death on the day of her funeral.
