Terror as two teens are involved in a car smash in Coronation Street
Two Coronation Street teenagers are set to put themselves in serious danger in upcoming scenes when they are involved in an accident after stealing a vehicle.
Betsy Swain (Sydney Martin) has had a rough time of it of late and, in true Betsy style, she’s quick to act up in next week’s episodes.
Last month, Betsy was caught up in Rob Donovan’s dramatic revenge plot, which saw him take Carla Connor (Alison King), Tracy Barlow (Kate Ford) and Lisa Swain (Vicky Myers) hostage.
When Lisa wrestled a gun from the escaped prisoner, a bullet was fired through the window, which ended up hitting Betsy in the shoulder.
In the days that followed, Lisa admitted to her daughter that she had been the one to pull the trigger, leaving Betsy furious.
However, it wasn’t the fact that she’d been shot that upset her, but the fact that Lisa had deliberately put herself in danger without a second thought of what might happen to Betsy.
‘Lisa’s constantly work focused and constantly putting herself in situations without thinking about the repercussions,’ actress Sydney Martin explained. ‘So they’re trying to navigate that relationship around that.
‘Lisa went in to protect Carla, and Betsy loves and respects Carla, but at the end of the day she’s Lisa’s daughter, and I just think she wants her mum to remember that.’
To make Lisa’s guilt even worse, it is as yet unknown whether Betsy will ever regain feeling in her arm, making her injury potentially life-changing.
‘She’s paralysed in the arm, so she goes back to being a bit younger and her mum really mummies her, and I think Betsy really enjoys that, because she’s getting that one-on-one time with her mum that I think she’s definitely lacked,’ Sydney revealed.
‘Whereas I think Carla sees it as Betsy needs to grow up a little bit! So I think it causes a bit of a strain in the dynamic between the three of them.’
In upcoming scenes, Betsy takes her anger out on Tracy and Carla as she rails at them for putting her in danger.
‘I don’t think it’s necessarily coming from a malicious perspective towards Carla, I think it’s just coming from a childish point of view.
‘And with Tracy, obviously she gave Rob a place to stay, so from her perspective, it’s Tracy’s fault. Betsy’s grasping at straws a little bit – she’s really angry and she wants to get back at Tracy.
‘They have a little altercation in Roy’s, and the way that Tracy speaks to her isn’t nice. That’s the final straw for her and she thinks “right, payback’s coming!”‘
Though Lisa tries to calm her down, Betsy ends up storming out, and Lauren Bolton (Cait Fitton) later finds her smashing up the contents of the florist van.
As she tries to stop her, she is sent into panic when Tracy begins to approach.
Without thinking, Lauren speeds off in the van, with Betsy still inside!
In the precinct, they are left surveying the damage of their reckless behaviour.
Panicking Lauren is quick to admit that she never passed her driving test and doesn’t have a license, and things only get worse when a police car pulls up.
‘They get out and the van is smoking, and they’ve crashed into a skip. They have a funny little altercation between the two of them, and then the police arrive. So that’s when they realise that this isn’t some harmless prank, this is breaking the law!’
Can Betsy and Lauren talk their way out of trouble, or are things set to get really bad for them both?
