Carla Connor (Alison King) has reflected on the loss of dearly missed Liam (Rob James-Collier) after DS Lisa Swain (Vicky Myers) spoke of her own grief in Coronation Street.

Liam was the brother of Carla’s ex-husband Paul (Sean Gallagher), who in turn were her distant cousins.

Confusing, we know.

He was killed in 2008 in a hit and run incident, orchestrated by her fiancé Tony Gordon (Gray O’Brien). He’d found out that they were engaging in an affair, and threatened to tell Liam’s wife Maria Connor (Samia Longchambon).

The women were left devastated by his death, as they both loved the same man.

In tonight’s (28th May) episode, with emotions running high as the net closes in on Lauren Bolton’s (Cait Fitton) murderer, DS Swain broke down in tears from the pressures of her family and work life.

Carla noticed her anguish when trying to return her police ID badge, and during a tense conversation at the station, accused her of not giving her full attention to freeing Roy Cropper (David Neilson), who has been wrongly imprisoned for the crime.

Swain was deeply hurt by the suggestion, and later we saw her having another tense phone conversation with her daughter about moving house.

It wasn’t long before the pair engaged in a steamy fling

Jumping into the car beside her, Carla urged her to speak in a personal capacity, with the copper introducing herself as Lisa for the first time.

She opened up about the loss of her wife Becky two and a half years ago and continued to talk about how their daughter was skipping her fashion course at school to get drunk.

Lisa went on to explain that Lauren’s case has made her reflective of their mother-daughter relationship and spoke of how adamant she was to find the killer.

Carla resonated with her grief, saying she never truly got over the loss of Liam and that despite so much time passing, it has never made it easier.

Later, with a sudden sense of clarity after letting the weight off her shoulders, Swain met with Roy and asked him for the truth surrounding the statement that Carla’s nephew Bobby (Jack Carroll) made about the masked intruder he saw on the day Lauren disappeared.

The story was, of course, fabricated in the hope it would free Roy.

With Carla going along with it, there is a strong possibility that they both could be arrested for perverting the course of justice.

After being arrested, Bobby remained adamant that he was telling the truth but Swain could see straight through his story and told Carla to get him to come clean so they could focus their efforts on getting a conclusive answer.

Furious at the belief that, if Roy was to be found guilty the case would be over, Carla tore a strip off the detective sergeant who further opened up about the events surrounding Becky’s death.

As a police officer, Becky was eager to solve a crime in order to train as a detective, but her partner’s interfering caused them to have a huge row before she was killed on the job. It turned out to be their final conversation.

We know that actress Vicky Myers has signed on the dotted line for a more permanent Coronation Street contract, so surely it’s only a matter of time before we see more of her home life.

But what part will Carla play in that?
