The chemistry between Coronation Street’s Steve McDonald (Simon Gregson) and Cassie Plummer (Claire Sweeney) has been bubbling away for months now – but next week there’s renewed hope they might finally get it together.

While Steve has been married more times than most, the former Rovers landlord has been unlucky in love since his ex-wife Tracy Barlow (Kate Ford) left him for Tommy Orpington (Matt Milburn) earlier this year.

He tried dating apps and even a very misguided cocktail night with father-in-law Ken (William Roache), but it was at a speed dating event that he found himself paired with Cassie, and the two got on surprisingly well.

While things have so far failed to take off between the pair, they’ve been in each other’s obits more over the last few months after Cassie began working as Ken’s carer.

Noticing their spark, Tracy even pushed for Steve to make a go of it with Cassie when she paid a return visit to the cobbles earlier this year.

Next week there is finally some movement after Cassie has a disastrous date and Steve is there to comfort her.

Steve is jealous when she reveals she is going on a date, making disparaging remarks about the man she is meeting.

While Cassie heads off on her date with a spring in her step, she is later disheartened when it doesn’t go as she’d hoped.

Steve then comes to the rescue and takes her to the Rovers, which boosts her self-esteem.

It’s soon clear the connection is still there between them, but will they finally give in to their feelings?
