What’s wrong with Debbie on Coronation Street and is she leaving as sad storyline confirmed
Debbie Webster will be diagnosed with dementia in sad scenes set to air in the coming months, but little hints of the upcoming storyline have finally started to appear
Debbie Webster will be at the forefront of a huge new storyline on Coronation Street. The popular character – played by actress Sue Devaney – will be diagnosed with dementia in upcoming scenes.
Ahead of the diagnosis, the ITV soap has started to drop little hints about Debbie’s diagnosis. In sad scenes, we will see Debbie and her family struggle as she gets diagnosed with dementia, eventually leading to her exit.
An insider revealed recently to The Mirror of Sue’s reaction to the storyline: “Sue is a total professional and is already putting her all into what she sees as hugely important long running storyline. She saw the positive impact of the MND storyline and hopes that her dementia story can have the same effect and raise awareness of the condition.”
Sources had previously teased it would be “one of the biggest storylines of the year”.
“It’s one of the show’s biggest storylines of the year, and a real chance for Sue to finally get her time in the spotlight – it will just be devastating for fans that it will effectively be her final storyline,” a source had said.
“It’s one of many major storylines new boss Kate Brooks has in the bag, and there will not be a dry eye in the house. There is no doubt in the Corrie family that she will give the performance of a lifetime and make Debbie’s exit one to remember for years.”
Debbie’s brother Kevin is also at the forefront of a huge health storyline this year, after being diagnosed with testicular cancer.
Kate Brooks, executive producer on the show, shared of the family: “So, I love the Websters. They’re just brilliant. It’s Kevin and Sally, they’re at the heart of it, you’ve got Tim, you’ve got Abi; they’re a great character group.
“So, as we go into the New Year, Kevin will discover that he’s got testicular cancer which causes a massive strain on his relationship. Obviously Abi’s a really strong character, but she’s going through her own turmoil at the same time. We want to tell this really truthfully. We’ve been working really closely with Macmillan Cancer Support to make sure that we tell the story right.”
She added: “It was really important we don’t show him being embarrassed or being reticent to talk to his friends about it, and he’s quite open about it, which I felt was quite refreshing. He talks to Tim and Steve and people like that, and they obviously all have their own inimitable style in how they handle it. But ultimately it’s about his relationship with Abi and that is going to be truly truly tested.”
