Who is Clayton Hibbs in Coronation Street as killer character makes his return?

Clayton Hibbs smirks in prison while he is being visited in Coronation Street

David Platt (Jack P. Shepherd) comes face-to-face with his late wife’s killer in Coronation Street this week, when Clayton Hibbs (Callum Harrison) makes an unwelcome return to the soap.

Last seen four years ago, Clayton – who is the son of David’s current wife Shona (Julia Goulding) – is currently in jail for murdering Kylie Platt (Paula Lane) back in 2016.

His return to screens will have huge repercussions for Shona and David, who are also navigating huge changes in their family, amid his mum Gail’s (Helen Worth) plans to sell up and move away from Weatherfield.

In case you need a recap, here’s the lowdown on the villainous character…

Who is Clayton Hibbs in Coronation Street?

Clayton made his debut in 2016 and was introduced as the stepbrother of Macca Hibbs (Gareth Berliner), and an old friend of Gemma Winter (Dolly-Rose Campbell) and Callum Logan (Sean Ward).

He quickly began causing trouble for Gemma at the Prima Doner kebab shop where she worked, before later trying to steal from the till.

He knocked Gemma unconscious during the altercation, and when her friend Kylie stepped in to try and help, Clayton stabbed her in the chest and fled the scene.

Kylie then died in her husband David’s arms as he cradled her on the cobbles in emotional scenes.

David would go on to attempt to kill Clayton, before the then-teenager was finally arrested and eventually given a life sentence, with a minimum of 15 years.

David later found love with Clayton’s mum Shona, only for him to be rocked by the identity of her son. Eventually, David overcame this and the pair married in 2019.

Clayton was last seen back in 2020 when Shona visited him in jail after losing parts of her memory.

Since then, her and David had agreed never to speak about Clayton again and she disowned her son – but last week, David got a shock when he received an email and phone call from him in prison…

What happens next?

David decides to keep Clayton’s attempts to contact him and Shona a secret from his wife and heads to see him in prison.

That visit has huge consequences later in the week, when the police inform Shona that Clayton is in hospital after trying to take his life.

Shona is in a blind panic, desperate to see her son – but will David come clean about his attempts to block contact?

What has been said about Clayton Hibbs’ return in Coronation Street?

Actress Julia Goulding revealed how Shona and David could ‘destroy each other’ when she finds out his huge secret.

‘When Shona finds out her husband has been gaslighting her and had a part in Clayton trying to take his own life, I dread to think what she’s going to do,’ Julia said. ‘But I don’t think she’ll take it lying down!

‘There’s going to be a lot of anger and pain, a possibility they could destroy each other,’ she continues. ‘Trudging through treacle is probably a good analogy,’ she added.
