Coronation Street mentioned Becky McDonald tonight - who was the ex of fan favourite Steve McDonald - and was played by top TV actress Katherine Kelly

Becky McDonald was a fan favourite on Coronation Street before her departure well over a decade ago.

Played by Katherine Kelly, Becky was married to Steve McDonald. In sad scenes back in 2012, Becky decided to depart the Cobbles for a new life after her husband Steve (Simon Gregson) decided to rekindle his romance with Tracy Barlow.

Katherine announced she was leaving the show after six years and in the years that followed, she was quizzed about a potential return. Speaking in 2018, she said: “It’s been 7 years now and I have been asked this recently. I don’t know quite how we would do it.”

Despite a return not seemingly on the cards, Becky’s character has been mentioned over the years. Back in 2018, David Platt made a trip to visit Becky in Barbados with the rest of his children – so her story continued away from the Cobbles.

Tonight, there is another mention of Becky – as Max learns the game is up in regards to starting the fire. Viewers know Max Turner (played by Paddy Bever) snuck into the garage and stole the petrol to set fire to the house.

Whilst he was the one who was most gravely injured in the fire, he had only done it to help David, who was struggling with all the taunts and scares by Harvey Gaskell, who he stole money from.

Becky is actually the aunt of Max. She is the sister of the late Kylie Platt, who tragically died in shocking scenes a few years back. Kylie was, of course, Max’s mother and when she died, she left David to look after Max and Lily.

It comes after it was confirmed Max star Paddy Bever is quitting Coronation Street. He told The Mirror: “After much reflection and in an incredibly difficult decision, I have chosen to step away from Max, and Coronation Street, to explore new opportunities. I have been surrounded by such kindness and support every step of the way.

“It’s been a great privilege to contribute to the legacy of such a well-loved and iconic show. This chapter has been unforgettable and while I look forward to what lies ahead, I will treasure these memories.”

Could Becky have something to do with Max’s departure from the Cobbles – and will Katherine Kelly return? Only time will tell.
