ITV Coronation Street fans rumble Mason’s DNA link to Weatherfield – and it’s not Gary
Coronation Street fans are sure they've rumbled a link between bad boy Mason and a previous character in Weatherfield after spotting a clue in a recent episode
Coronation Street fans have worked out Mason’s link to Weatherfield after spotting a clue.
Mason has finally been exposed for his bullying ways, now Maria and Gary know the truth about what Liam has been subjected to at school at the hands of villain Mason and Dylan. He has refused to take the blame for what happened, with Dylan taking the rap for what’s been happening to Liam, leaving Dylan also feeling trapped.
Some fans have been convinced that Mason might be linked to Gary in some way, but now some viewers have rumbled another twist, which might see Mason’s true identity ‘exposed’. Whilst Liam’s mum Maria and partner Gary chatted with the headteacher, fans were confused as to why Mason’s parents had not been called, with fans sure that might lead to a big identity storyline.
Viewers are sure that Mason must have a familial connection to a well known face on the Cobbles, with fans now sure that it could be Owen Armstrong who is Mason’s dad, rather than any link to Gary.

Owen was played by Ian Puleston-Davies and was on screen for five years until 2015. He was the father of Izzy and her sister Katy, but he famously fell out with Gary – who was Izzy’s boyfriend at the time. He was linked to criminal Pat Phelan, who managed to con him out of thousands of pounds and left the Armstrong and Windass families with no money.
The storyline with Mason is part of the soap’s aim to tackle the topic of bullying and the effects it can have on young people. Samia Longchambon said of Liam’s recovery: “Maria is really paranoid, and understandably so, given that Liam is from the Connor family and we have all been through similar when Aidan Connor (Liam’s cousin) committed suicide, so I don’t think she will be able to leave Liam alone without fearing the worst. This is going to be an ongoing issue for Liam. We are considering all options from homeschooling to counselling. Of course when it comes to mental health, there’s unfortunately a massively long waiting list. I think the great thing about this storyline is that we are doing it in real time. We aren’t rushing this at all and doing everything as it would happen.”
Iain Macleod, Executive Producer of Continuing Drama at ITV, added: “This is a story that will have immense personal resonance for many people – it certainly did for some of the Coronation Street team. We felt it was important to show the mental damage that bullying can do to people on the receiving end, especially in the modern world, when children are faced with what can seem like inescapable cyber-bullying. The aggression doesn’t stop at the school gates but can find you in the safety of your own home. Having said that, it was also important that across the story as a whole, we showed some hope for Liam and that by speaking up, finally, he can begin the process of escaping his nightmare and beginning to heal.”
