Coronation Street star Michael Byrne has sadly died at the age of 82. He was best known for playing Gail Platt’s long-lost father Ted Page, who came into his daughter’s life after 50 years after coming out as gay and discovering Audrey had given birth to his daughter. He gave Gail away at her wedding to Joe McIntyre, but was written out of the soap for good in 2021.

Byrne also made his name in the Harry Potter franchise, starring as Gellert Grindelwald in Deathly Hallows Part 1 in 2010. Other acting credits include Bond film Tomorrow Never D!es, 1995’s Braveheart, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade and Gangs of New York.

But Corrie fans will remember him best for starring in 67 episodes of the ITV soap as Gail’s long-lost dad, before she was rocked by the news of his death in 2021.

Michael is survived by his wife Carole – despite their separation, she continued to care for him at the end of his life. He also leaves behind two daughters, Tara and Bryony, and three grandchildren – Tom, Chloe and Jasmine.

He died on June 20th, though the news was only announced today (June 30).

Tributes have flooded in from fans, with one tweeting: “Enjoyed Ted immensely. He had a great sense of humour and his scenes with the older cast were always brilliant. Very sad that the character was sidelined and later killed off.”

His final on-screen role came in 2023’s The Phoebus Files, in which he starred as Mr Lucas. However, he will also star posthumously in upcoming release Bjorn of the Dead, as Derek.
