Coronation Street confirms new nightmare neighbours – and they will take down a major character
Coronation Street has revealed two nightmare neighbours that will arrive on the cobbles next month.
Last month, producer Kate Brooks teased that the new faces are ‘livewires’ that are going to cause ‘a lot of damage and a lot of chaos.’
‘There is a link to Chesney (Sam Aston) initially, but they are coming to stir up a lot of trouble, and open up the floodgates and unpack the past of one of our big characters, which is Kit (Jacob Roberts)’ she added.
‘So, really interesting, wonderful and dynamic stuff that’s going to be fantastic. We’re really excited, they come in with oodles of drama. They are shaking things up. They’re neighbours from hell.
‘They’re overfamiliar, likeable and they’ve got kids. Initially they develop a friendship with Chesney and Gemma (Dolly-Rose Campbell), but there are other things to unpack. I wouldn’t want to get on the wrong side of them – especially Mick!’
It has been announced this morning that actors Farrel Hegarty and Joe Layton will be playing Lou and Mick Michaelis, a young couple who move into Mawdsley Street with their two young daughters.
Hardcore fans will know that this is the street behind Coronation Street, and is where Len Fairclough (Peter Adamson) lived and worked at his builder’s yard for decades.
It’s also where original soap gossip Martha Longhurst (Lynne Carol) would retire to after a night sipping milk stout in the Rovers.
We’ll first meet Lou on 12th February, when she sparks up a friendship with Gemma who she recognises as one of the mums from Bessie Street Primary School.
In the following episode, we’ll meet Mick and learn that he’s the fella that has taunted poor Ches’ in his silver van for months.
Viewers will remember that the mystery driver blocked him in at Freshco, and in response he poured sugar into the petrol tank.
The vehicle also came hurtling towards him, clearly in an attempt to shake the Weatherfield legend.
After making pals with the Winter-Browns, they soon turn their attentions to exposing the secret past of DC Kit Green.
What do they know about him?
On joining the long-running ITV show, Farrel Hegarty said: ‘I’m delighted and so grateful to be joining the cast of Coronation Street. I have genuinely been blown away by how ridiculously warm and nice everyone is.
‘Lou is definitely an exciting character to play because she’s got good and bad parts to her, she’s a life force and full of beans. She’s a very colourful person who likes to make waves and try to cause chaos.
‘But she also has that strong family loyalty, especially between Mick and Lou, they are thick as thieves and will stick up for each other, even when they probably shouldn’t…’
Joe Layton added: ‘Coronation Street is such an institute in British television and to get to walk down the cobbles in Mick’s shoes is so exciting. To also do it alongside Farrel is awesome – we are having great fun together and connecting really well whilst developing our characters.
‘It also gives the opportunity to get a look behind the curtain of this huge machine and be a small cog within the big picture of Coronation Street and to work alongside people who take such pride in their work.
‘It’s just a really happy place, friendly and welcoming. I’m going to relish every moment of it.’
Eagle-eyed Corrie watchers may recognise Farrel as she played a reporter back in 2019. Joe is no stranger to soaps, as alongside a string of other roles, he was also a guest star on Casualty last year.
With more information about her disorderly new arrivals out in the open, Kate Brooks added today: ‘Chaotic and loud, Mick and Lou bulldoze their way into Weatherfield, causing absolute carnage for the residents of Coronation Street.
‘Although they’re the life and soul of any party, they’re equally not everyone’s cup of tea, and they soon find themselves at the root of some explosive drama.
‘We’re thrilled to introduce these new characters into the mix, and the cobbles certainly won’t be quiet with this family around.’
The Michaelis family will undoubtedly evoke memories of when the Battersby clan arrived back in 1997, and soon rattled pensioners Emily Bishop (Eileen Derbyshire) and Percy Sugden (Bill Waddington).
Bring on the drama!
