Coronation Street airs sad exit for fan favourite Dev Alahan as he’s ‘replaced’
A Coronation Street icon is taking some time away from the Cobbles to see family, as the character made a decision to leave this evening
A Coronation Street icon is departing the Cobbles and is being ‘replaced’.
Dev Alahan decided he needed to visit his family in India after his aunt suffered a fall. It will mark a short break from the Cobbles for actor Jimmi Harkishin, but he will be back on the show soon.
Speaking about his decision to go, Dev said: “It’s going to cost me an absolute fortune,” as Bernie added in the Rovers Return: “But that’s what you should be spending your money on isn’t it? Family.”
“Yeah family’s important,” Aadi said, with Bernie adding: “And I’m sure she’ll appreciate you being there.” Aadi then replied: “Yeah you can always rely on family,” as Bernie asked him: “Why are you being weird?”
“Because he wants me to leave him in charge of the business when he’s gone,” Dev said, with Aadi replying: “No I’m just worried about Auntie Gita, that’s why I’m being weird. But dad this could be the perfect opportunity to prove I can do it.”
Dev finally agreed with the suggestion, and told his son: “Daily reports ok!” Aadi then suggested he wanted more money, but Dev wasn’t keen on the idea: “You won’t be getting more money. It’s a trial period. Do not push it.”
Dev will depart the show briefly
It comes amid a number of exits from the ITV soap, with sources telling us some big drama is ahead.
“The idea that Corrie is running out of steam and the end is in sight couldn’t be further from the truth. We’ve got a huge stunt, a flurry of returns and some hard-hitting storylines that put some Weatherfield favourites centre-stage. There’s some really family-focussed scenes ahead, and some twists and turns that will keep viewers on the edge of their seats!” the source told us.
In December, new Corrie boss Kate Brooks told us: “Coming up in 2025, there’s loads of really exciting stuff. There’s loads of shocks coming up. Just when you think a story is going in one direction, we do a complete 360 and it goes in a completely different direction.
“I think bold, innovative storytelling is key. Exciting, thrilling drama that really keeps the audience captivated. Compelling drama, but at the heart of it there needs to be a truth, and I always seek to find the truth in those stories.”
She added: “I am genuinely, not just as a producer but as a fan, excited about what’s coming up, because all the stories are on fire! It feels like we’ve got all the big plans in place. The Platts are going to feature really heavily. We’ve got the Websters, building that clan and seeing those dynamics. The Connors, with Lisa and Carla and Betsy and Ryan. Building that family and building the factory. We’ve got lots coming up that is going to be really exciting.
“My vision is making sure that we keep people engaged, keep people entertained and keep people guessing! We don’t want them to become complacent, we want to pull the rug from underneath them sometimes. We want them to be sat at home with a cup of tea and a biscuit and have something happen that they did not expect. So, expect the unexpected in 2025!”
