Coronation Street fans have reason to celebrate as Chris Gascoyne, best known for his unforgettable portrayal of Peter Barlow, is officially back in front of the cameras after stepping away from the spotlight for three years.
The beloved actor, now 58, left the iconic ITV soap in 2023 after spending two decades bringing one of Weatherfield’s most complex characters to life. Since then, he has kept a remarkably low profile, leaving many viewers wondering when they might see him on screen again.
Now, that wait is over.
Chris delighted fans by sharing a behind-the-scenes photo from the set of his latest project, The Northumbria Mysteries, accompanied by the simple but exciting message:
“I’m back – lots to catch up on…”
The image shows Chris filming alongside acclaimed actor Robson Green, instantly sparking excitement among television fans eager to see the much-loved star return.
A Brand-New BBC Drama
Rather than returning to the cobbles, Chris is taking on an entirely new challenge in the BBC crime drama The Northumbria Mysteries.Coronation Street's Chris Gascoyne lands first major role since leaving soap
The series stars Robson Green as Joe Ruby, a former prisoner and recovering gambling addict determined to turn his troubled past into something positive. Using his knowledge of the criminal world, Joe teams up with police detective DI Rose O’Connell to investigate long-forgotten cold cases while confronting secrets from his own life.
Chris’ exact role is still being kept under wraps, adding even more intrigue to the upcoming series.
Behind-the-scenes photographs show the actor sporting oversized sunglasses, a black coat and silver jewellery while preparing for filming, hinting at a character very different from Peter Barlow.
A Star-Studded Cast
The drama also features Call the Midwife favourite Liz White as DI Rose O’Connell, while acclaimed actor Simon Callow is set to make a guest appearance.
Speaking about the series, Robson Green teased that viewers can expect far more than a traditional detective drama.

“Set against this amazing backdrop, you have this really unusual, likeable and oddball pairing who slowly realise they have a connection. They’re trying to work out what that connection is and later discover what it really means.”

Filming Across North East England
Production is already underway, with camera crews spotted filming across some of North East England’s most picturesque locations.
Several of the region’s best-known landmarks—including Whitley Bay and the nearby village of Earsdon—will feature prominently throughout the series.
Local residents even caught a glimpse of the production after a village pub landlord shared a photo of the cast and crew enjoying a well-earned drink following a day’s filming, confirming the exciting project was taking shape.
Fans Welcome Chris Back
After years away from television, Chris Gascoyne’s return is already generating plenty of excitement among soap and drama fans alike.
While many will always remember him as Peter Barlow, The Northumbria Mysteries offers the actor an opportunity to showcase a fresh side of his talent in what promises to be one of the BBC’s most anticipated new dramas.
With filming now in full swing and anticipation continuing to build, viewers won’t have to wait too much longer before seeing Chris Gascoyne back where many believe he belongs—on their television screens once again.
