Coronation Street viewers are worried that a cherished character may be written out of the soap after an impressive 46-year run.

Audrey Roberts, portrayed by Sue Nicholls, has been a constant presence on the cobbles since her first appearance in 1979 as Gail Platt’s (Helen Worth) mother. Over the years, she’s become a fan favourite and has been involved in numerous major plotlines.

Viewers have shared in Audrey’s highs and lows, including her marriage to Alf Roberts (Bryan Mosley) in 1985 and his heartbreaking death in 1999.

They’ve also seen Audrey become a great-grandmother to characters like Bethany Platt (Lucy Fallon), and work alongside her grandson David Platt (Jack P Shepherd) at Audrey’s hair salon.

More recently, she was left heartbroken when her daughter Gail departed the cobbles last year after a quarter of a century, to start afresh in France with husband Jesse Chadwick (John Thompson), reports Leicestershire Live.

In February this year, she made the decision to sell her Grasmere Drive home to fund repairs to grandson David’s house, which fans will remember he set alight in an insurance scam.

Consequently, she moved in with David and the rest of her family. However, fans now fear that Audrey’s tenure on the soap could be drawing to a close, as they speculate about a shocking death twist.

This week on the soap, Audrey celebrated her 85th birthday and enjoyed a meal at The Bistro with her loved ones, including grandchildren Sarah (Tina O’Brien) and David.

However, fans can’t shake off the feeling that a surprise demise might be looming. On a Corrie Facebook fan page, one viewer posted: “Glad to see Audrey is back in it more!”.

Another speculated: “What if they are leading into a new storyline for her?” A third suggested: “Audrey to get killed off then?”.

A fourth shared: “I’ve been saying this for a few months, I would be so sad!” A fifth concurred: “Same, it would definitely be a twist. It might be the soap’s Xmas storyline?” A sixth chimed in: “Yeah could be.”
