Coronation Street Debbie star lets slip huge Christmas plot as she teases ‘wedding bells’

Coronation Street star Sue Devaney might have let slip a huge Christmas plot involving “wedding bells”.

The 58-year-old plays Debbie Webster on the hit ITV soap, who was diagnosed with early-onset dementia earlier this year.

Despite initially keeping her diagnosis a secret from her family, Debbie has since received support from her brothers, Kevin (Michael Le Vell) and Carl (Jonathan Howard), as well as sister-in-law Abi (Sally Carman).

That’s not all, as Debbie has recently rekindled her romance with Ronnie Bailey (Vinta Morgan), with the pair getting engaged at Dev Alahan (Jimmi Harkishin) and Bernie Winter’s (Jane Hazlegrove) wedding.

In recent scenes, Ronnie and Glenda Shuttleworth (Jodie Prenger) persuaded Debbie to join a dementia choir at the community centre.

However, the rehearsal didn’t go as planned, with Debbie being kicked out of the group after trying to take over. Back in the Rovers, she made a plan to start her own choir with Glenda.

Speaking on the red carpet at the National Television Awards on Wednesday (September 10), actor Sue teased the soap’s upcoming Christmas storyline, which could centre around Debbie and Ronnie getting hitched.

“Christmas, I hope there’s going to be wedding bells,” she said.

The star also teased that the wedding could feature a special appearance from the dementia choir, as well as a possible “double act” story for Debbie and Glenda.

“I hope there’s going to be a bit of a choir going, a bit of a dementia choir going on. That’s what Glenda would do,” she shared.

Sue went on to explain how Debbie’s dementia journey could pan out over the coming years.

“I think it’s gonna be a journey and it’s gonna be a slow journey. I think there will be lots of highs, as well as lots of lows,” she explained.

“With any terminal illness, if you’ve been diagnosed with something, you think, ‘Right, I’ve only got so long to cram in everything I want to cram in to have a great time.’ So, maybe Debbie’s going in that direction before she deteriorates.”

The star previously revealed that Debbie would be on our screens for some time following her diagnosis.

Speaking on Lorraine back in June, Sue said: “She’s not going anywhere yet! I know the story is going to go well into 2027, so Debbie’s not going anywhere.”
